“Azucar’s trademark is authentic, reasonably priced South American food served as tapas in a warm, informal and relaxing setting. In the words of Seb McGowan: “Viva Cuba has established an excellent reputation for inexpensive, top quality tapas to suit all tastes. We look forward to bringing our knowledge of South American delicacies to Brewery Wharf and adding an informal eating experience to what has already become a popular, more traditional dining area.”
Combining a great selection of punchy cocktails, Spanish and Latin American beers and new world wines, and the odd cigar, Azucar promises to bring something very different to the area. The drinks menu has been created by another Leeds ambassador Robert “Skippy” Jupp ex Mojo and Skippy’s and he will be overseeing the execution of the drinks in the initial months. With an extensive list specialising in tequila and rum and numerous classes and tasting sessions Azucar will add a missing dimension to the Leeds drinking scene. Combine this with its stunning location and Azucar will soon become a hot destination for a quality drink. Think Erdinger on
draught, bohemia beer, and Partida Agave Nectar Margaritas.
Local legend and author Howard Marks will also be taking an active role in Azucar by drawing on his vast travel and writing experiences to add a creative edge to the bar. Howard, famous for a number of books including Mr Nice, has chosen Leeds as his home and lives one minute away from Azucar. He’ll use the bar as a base for when he’s writing or simply enjoying a mojito. In his own words, “You have to live life to write about it.”
The decor is dark and richly colourful. The walls are adorned with Howards travel memorabilia, while the furniture is an eclectic mix of old church benches and pews (with a pulpit functioning as a DJ booth) and comfortable sofas.”
