Rahul Sharma in his own words…

RahulMy Salsa journey began around the end of 2010 when I decided to do something about my two left feet. I guess the seeds might have been planted when I was at uni, as one of my closest friends was a huge Dirty Dancing fan, and I probably watched “Baby” and “Johnny” do the last dance a hundred times!

I took my first classes at SalsaLeeds once a week for a month and soon got addicted enough to add Sundays and Thursdays with Nicolai V’s iSalsa, then Tuesdays with Julian, Ces and Kerry, Mondays with Stoute and Theo and finally added the unique music & musicality classes and partnerwork with Philip Charles. I met Mark Johnson, Tom (Yu-Fei) and Holly Bradley – my salsa angles! By the beginning of 2011 I was dancing 3-4 hours for 5 nights a week and at all weekend events in town! And then it happened!!!! Milton Cobo and Isabel Freiberger dancing at a congress in Japan! A youtube video that opened my eyes to the level of dancing outside the Leeds social dancing scene! Mark Johnson did the rest by giving me all his salsa videos and showing the initiative by venturing outside of Leeds for workshops. I did my first ever salsa workshop with Emil Prysak in 2011 and attended SoS for the first time in 2012. It would be an understatement to say that I was scared shitless to go on the dancefloor when I saw some of the best dancers in UK dancing their hearts out! I managed 3 dances in the far corner of the other dancefloor and returned to Leeds inspired and with an even stronger drive to learn to dance like the people I saw in London. I attended my first congress in April at Mambocity. It fuelled my hunger for more and I went to The Prague Latino Festival where I met Magna Gopal for the first time!

In the summer of 2012, the salsa gods decided that it was time that I met Toan! A few weeks later I had signed up to his teacher training program and worked with him to organise and promote the TNT On2 Fundamentals and Styling workshops in Leeds. The TNT teacher training has been intense! Frequent trips to London to train, dance and stretch myself beyond my comfort zone. It has been an exciting rollercoaster ride!”
